Brazilian ArcelorMittal Pecém has announced the approval of the first phase of a project aimed at developing a new line for the production of hot-rolled steel coils at its plant in Peceme in the state of Ceará, according to local media reports.
The initial investment, estimated at BRL 35 million (USD 6.8 million), will be spent on technical research, engineering and project development processes. The company has made it clear that this stage does not yet cover construction work or equipment procurement.
If the project continues beyond this technical stage, it would represent an important shift for the Pecsem plant, which currently specializes in the production of steel slabs, a semi-finished product with lower added value. With the planned construction of a rolling mill, the facility will be able to produce hot-rolled coils, expanding its product portfolio and serving new market segments, while maintaining its rated steel production capacity at 3 million tons per year.
Final approval is still required
Although this announcement marks progress towards technological modernization and steel production with higher added value in Ceará, ArcelorMittal stressed that the project remains subject to further evaluation.
The start of physical construction will depend on the results of engineering studies and, most importantly, on the subsequent approval of the board of directors of the multinational company.
According to the government of the state of Ceará, the full project could require an investment of about 4.5 billion reais (872 million US dollars) if implemented. Ceara Governor Elmano de Freitas said the project could create about 3,000 jobs during the construction phase, as well as support the development of the state's industrial base.
The project is expected to strengthen Ceara's industrial chain
Ceara's industrial sector is closely monitoring the possible installation of a manufacturing plant hot-rolled steel coils in Pecsem, as this could facilitate further integration of local steel production. chain and increase value addition to the state's industrial economy. Governor Elmano de Freitas said the project will be important for the development of domestic production and industrial growth envisaged in Ceará, adding that the basic industry
