The first all-electric steel mill
According to the statement, the new plant will be the first steel mill in the country to run entirely on electricity, without using natural gas anywhere in the production process.
The company said the project marks the return of steel production to the Hunter region, where steel production was previously concentrated at the former BHP Newcastle Steelworks steel plant.
The annual production capacity of the plant will be 600,000 tons of finished steel for the housing, transport and energy sectors. Rebar will be the first product produced at the plant, and wire rod and rolled steel are planned for subsequent stages of development.
The project is expected to create over 200 full-time jobs, including positions for locksmiths, electricians, crane operators, metallurgists, and engineers, as well as employment during construction and in regional supply chains.
An electric induction furnace supplied by Danieli
Greensteel Australia said the plant will use electric induction furnace technology, replacing traditional gas furnaces with an electricity-based steel production process. The company stated that this process would not lead to direct carbon emissions and would allow the company to operate independently of natural gas supplies.
The main equipment, including an electric induction furnace, will be supplied by the Italian engineering company Danieli. Work on the restoration and modernization of the facility is scheduled to begin before the end of this year, and the main equipment is expected to arrive in October 2027.
The announcement of the second stage is planned
Greensteel Australia stated that the Mayfield project represents the first stage of its development plans. A second announcement regarding the second phase of the project is expected to be made in the coming weeks.
