HRC imports to Turkey will decrease in the first half of 2026 as China and Egypt lose ground

According to preliminary data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in June of this year, imports of hot rolled steel (HRC) to Turkey amounted to 300,255 metric tons, up 3.1 percent from May and 4.1 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the value of these imports amounted to 170.77 million dollars, an increase of 7.8 percent compared to the previous month and 8.7 percent year-on-year.

For the period from January to June, imports of wheat flour to Turkey amounted to 1.73 million tons, which is 6.7% less, while the value of these imports decreased by 8.1% to 949.67 million dollars year-on-year. The decrease was mainly caused by a reduction in imports from China and Egypt. Imports from China decreased by 51.8% year-on-year to 341,769 tons, while imports from Egypt decreased by 39.2% to 148,009 tons.

For comparison, Russia has become the largest supplier of HRC to Turkey - 409,846 tons. tons, despite a slight decrease of 1.2% year-on-year. The increase in imports from Malaysia to 277,395 tons from a very low level last year was one of the most noticeable changes in the supply structure. Imports from Japan also increased by 27.2% to 179,162 tons, which partially limited the overall decline.

However, the situation was more favorable in June. Monthly imports of HRC to Turkey increased by 4.1% year-on-year to 300,255 tons, while the value of these imports increased by 8.7 percent to $170.77 million. In June, imports from Russia increased by six percent to 111,257 tons, imports from Japan increased by 53.4 percent to 41,272 tons, and imports from Egypt increased by 8.1 percent to 37,102 tons. In contrast, imports from China in June decreased by 15% to 58,700 tons, indicating that the shortage of raw materials of Chinese origin persists.

During the period under review, Russia was the largest source of imports of solid household waste to Turkey, which supplied 409,846 tons, which is 1.2% less than last year. Russia is followed by China (341,769 thousand tons), which is 51.8% less, and Malaysia (277,395 thousand tons), which is significantly more compared to the same period last year.
