Liberty Steel at the Dalzell plant resumes rolling of steel slabs from Kazakhstan

Liberty Steel Dalzell, owned by GFG Alliance, in Motherwell, Scotland, is resuming rolling operations using steel slabs imported from Kazakhstan, amid ongoing monitoring of the financial and operational situation at the enterprise, according to media reports.

GFG Alliance This import of slabs was confirmed to be necessary for the restart of the plant after the accident at British Steel, which the company described as the UK's only supplier of household stoves.

Dalzell transforms in Kazakhstan after the British began disrupting supplies

Dalzell Plant is experiencing prolonged production interruptions, having stopped operations in August 2024 amid weak market conditions. Earlier plans called for restarting the plant using a slab supplied by British Steel's Scunthorpe division. In February of this year, the GFG Alliance announced that the financing was for Dalzell and that the company was working on purchasing slabs from British Steel.

However, GFG said that due to a malfunction at British Steel, imported materials were the only available option for resuming production.

The company expects Dalzell to resume supplies of slabs to British Steel later this year, including materials intended to support prospective defense contracts.

Dalzell has a production capacity of about 300,000 tons of slabs per year. GFG calls it the largest and most productive sheet metal plant in the UK.

The relaunch comes as Dalzell seeks to expand its involvement in steel supplies for the UK's defense needs. The plant was selected to supply rolled steel for Navantia UK's ship production program to support the Solid fleet. Earlier it was reported that Liberty had received an order for approximately 34,000 tons of rolled steel for three ships to support the Solid fleet, but supply difficulties were encountered. Financing the purchase of slabs led to a delay in full-scale production.
