According to the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TCUD), in August this year, steel production in Turkey decreased by 0.4% year-on-year to 3.38 million tons, while in the first eight months, steel production in the country increased by 6.8% to 26.56 million tons. one million tons. In the period from January to August, the production of billets in Turkey increased by 0.7% to 15.88 million tons, while the production of slabs increased by 17.3% to 10.67 million tons year-on-year.

During the specified period, Turkey's finished steel production increased by 3.7% year-on-year to 29.32 million tons, while finished steel consumption increased by 3.3% year-on-year to 26.59 million tons.

In August, steel exports from Turkey increased by 8.1% year-on-year to 1.33 million tons, while the value of these exports increased by 12.7% year-on-year to $930.28 million. In the first eight months of this year, the country's steel exports increased by 3.1 percent year-on-year to 10.33 million tons, while its value increased by 2.9 percent to $7.01 billion. As for exported products, exports of flat rolled products and long products from Turkey in the first eight months amounted to 4.17 million tons and 5.42 million tons, respectively, which is 4.4% less and 3.8% more year-on-year, while exports of semi-finished steel products increased by 68.3% to 738,303 tons.

Steel imports to Turkey in August decreased by 8.4% year-on-year to 1.43 million tons, while the value of these imports decreased by 1.4% to 1.05 billion dollars. Between January and August, the country's steel imports decreased by 3.7 percent year-on-year to 12.17 million tons, while its value decreased by 4.5 percent to $8.45 billion. An analysis of imported products shows that imports of flat and long steel products in the first eight months, the volume of imports of semi-finished steel products for the month amounted to 5.93 million tons and 927,451 million tons, respectively, which is 1.3% and 11.4% less than in the same period last year, while imports of semi-finished steel products decreased by 4.8% year-on-year to 5.3 million tons.

In the first eight months of this year, the ratio of steel exports to imports in Turkey increased to 82.93 percent from 76.98 percent recorded in the same period last year.

According to the TCUD statement, these imports accounted for 44.6% of the total consumption of metal products in the first eight months of this year. The share of imports in the consumption of flat rolled products reached 58.8%. Against this background, the association stated that in 2026 it is becoming increasingly important to introduce measures that would allow quantitative restrictions on imports, especially from the Far Eastern countries and Russia, increase domestic consumption and accelerate the transition to products with higher added value.
