According to data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in August of this year, the volume of scrap metal imports to Turkey increased by 0.5% year-on-year, but decreased by 15.7% month-on-month to 1.40 million tons. The volume of these imports amounted to 561.89 million dollars, which is 11.5% more than in the same period last year and 18.6% less than in the previous month.
In the first eight months of this year, the volume of scrap metal imports to Turkey amounted to 12.73 million tons, which is 4.0% more, while the value of these imports increased by 9.0% to 5.02 billion dollars year-on-year.

The USA remained the largest supplier of scrap metal to Turkey in January-August, Shipments increased by 7.2% year-on-year to 2.48 million tons. However, imports from the United States in August decreased by 14.0% year-on-year to 269,070 tons, indicating that the cumulative growth in the last month was not sustainable.
The United Kingdom came in second place, ahead of the Netherlands, where shipments in January-August increased by 4.3% to 1.50 million tons, and August shipments increased by 27.0% year-on-year. Imports from the Netherlands decreased by 25.8% to 1.46 million tons, which is 507,293 tons less than those from other suppliers. Shipments from the Netherlands also decreased by 59.8% in August.
The largest absolute increase was recorded in Romania, where shipments increased by 365,104 tons and shipments increased by 59.1 percent to 982,846 tons. Imports from Russia increased by 31.8 percent to 691,175 tons, ranking sixth, while France ranked ninth with 428,809 tons, an increase of 43.8 percent. Imports from Lithuania increased by 15.7% to 646,635 tons, and from Bulgaria - by 110.6% to 250,814 tons. In August, shipments from Russia and France increased by 87.7% and 359.1% year-on-year, respectively, while shipments from Lithuania decreased by 17.0%..
