After several days of mass protests, the army unexpectedly stopped the rule of Muhammad Mursi on July 3, and appointed the Supreme Judge Adley Mansur as a temporary president until new elections, the holding of which has not yet been discussed. While the opponents of Mursi celebrated news with fireworks, the brotherhood of Muslims refused to recognize the change of power and threatened the rallies.
The Armed Forces of Egypt and Abdel Fattah al-Sisi
Recent events emphasized the role of the Armed Forces of Egypt, as the most powerful power of the country. The Minister of Defense, General Abd al-Fatta al-Sisi, was a key figure.
On June 30, General Al-Sisi warned that the armed forces are ready to intervene "to stop the immersion of Egypt in the dark tunnel of the conflict and enmity." As a result, Mr. Mursi was overthrown by the army and placed under house arrest in an unidentified place, and Adley Mahmud Mansur was swore to the oath as a temporary president.
General al-Sisi was appointed to the highest military positions of Mursi in August last year. Al-Sisi loyalty to the Islamist president was often the subject of speculation. ultimately, he acted in order to protect the image of the military and their interests.
Front of national salvation and Muhammad al-Baradei
Mr. Al-Baradei, 71, is the coordinator of the Union of liberal and Left Parties and Youth Groups, known as the front of national salvation. The former diplomat, who received the Nobel Prize of the World for his work as the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is well known in the international arena.
The front of national salvation was created at the end of last year after Mr. Mursi left his broad powers in the constitutional declaration.
Muhammad al-Baradei expressed the military intentions to return the country to the democratically elected government.
Tamarod
Tamarod - means "rebel" in Arabic, a new group of lower classes, which called for a national protest against Muhammad Mursi. The organization brought millions of Egyptians to the streets of Cairo.
When General al-Sisi made his television statement that the president had been overthrown, he was accompanied by religious and political leaders, including two representatives of Tamarod.
Mansur Adley and the Supreme Constitutional Court
On July 4, Adley Mahmud Mansur, the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt, was swore to the oath as the temporary leader of the country. In his speech, he praised mass street demonstrations, which led to the removal of Mr. Mursi. The revolution, according to him, should continue until "we will not stop the production of tyrants."
