The world's second largest steel producer, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp, announces that it has signed a definitive joint venture agreement with Indonesia's largest steel producer, Krakatau Steel, to produce and sell automotive flat products in Indonesia. The Krakatau Nippon Steel Sumikin (KNSS) joint venture was established in December 2012 and has since been in discussions on a project to build a new steel facility in Indonesia.
To implement the project, the two metallurgical companies are planning to make investments of about $ 300 million. KNSS intends to create a galvanizing, annealing and processing line (GAPL) that combines the functions of both a continuous annealing line and a continuous galvanizing line. To build a wastewater treatment system, filter cloth and multilevel filtration will be widely used here. The plant will have a production capacity of about 480 thousand tons of high-grade steel per year. The project will be completed in mid-2017.
The GAPL production line is considered to be the most advanced equipment currently in operation at the NSSMC smelters. The equipment is capable of producing high quality cold rolled sheets, galvanized sheets, and galvanized steel sheets, including sheets for automotive exterior panels. “With this new line, KNSS will be able to adapt its business to the different needs of automakers,” said company management.
Nippon Steel believes that the Indonesian auto market will continue to expand and automakers are expected to increase their demand for anti-corrosion and high-strength steel as well.
