On October 29, Italy’s Court of Cassation rejected all appeals by Acciaierie d’Italia and Ilva, making final the order to stop hot-end operations at the former Ilva steelworks in Taranto. The ruling cites risks to human health and the environment.
The court’s Joint Civil Sections upheld a July 27 decision by the Milan Court of Appeal ordering hot-end production to cease.
The facilities had been kept in preheating mode while the Supreme Court considered the case. A government measure allowed them to remain in that state until December 15. Extraordinary commissioners must now determine the technical procedures and timetable for shutting down the blast furnaces.
The ruling casts doubt on the continuity of production at Italy’s largest steelmaking site. The sale of the group is still under way, with binding offers due by November 8.
