ArcelorMittal targets more than 20 million tonnes of Liberian iron ore exports

ArcelorMittal targets more than 20 million tonnes of Liberian iron ore exports

ArcelorMittal’s cumulative investment in Liberia is nearing $4 billion. The company expects to export more than 20 million tonnes of iron ore from the country in 2027, up from less than 5 million tonnes in 2024. ArcelorMittal Liberia CEO Michiel van der Merwe announced the targets at the Liberia International Mining and Energy Conference and Expo.

The project’s second phase includes the country’s first large-scale iron ore concentrator, which will produce premium concentrate for steelmakers, including plants using technologies designed to cut carbon emissions. In the longer term, the company plans to raise production to 30 million tonnes a year.

ArcelorMittal has invested about $800 million in rehabilitating and expanding government-owned railway and port infrastructure linking its mines in Nimba County with Buchanan Port. Other companies seeking to use the route will have to fund any additional capacity they require. The Liberian government will determine access to the Tokadeh–Buchanan railway, which is expected to be operated by an independent company from 2030.

In January 2026, ArcelorMittal said its $1.8 billion expansion had brought cumulative investment in Liberia to $3.5 billion. The project includes the concentrator, railway and port upgrades, and two power plants. An amended mineral development agreement extends the company’s operations through 2050, with an option to renew for another 25 years.
