JSW JFE Steel Limited (JJSL), a 50:50 joint venture between India’s JSW Steel and Japan’s JFE Steel, will increase annual crude steel capacity at its Sambalpur plant in Odisha from 4.5 million to 9.5 million tonnes. The partners approved the expansion on October 23, 2026, and plan to start operations at the new facilities in 2030.
The project includes a blast furnace, two coke plants, a pellet plant, two converters, two slab casters and a hot-rolling line, along with additional power generation and utility facilities.
The expansion follows the companies’ December 2025 announcement on developing their integrated steelmaking venture. In the longer term, they plan to gradually raise JJSL’s crude steel capacity to 15 million tonnes a year.
JFE Steel expects Indian steel demand to grow as infrastructure investment and manufacturing develop. The company aims to strengthen supplies of high-value-added steel products in India. Under its strategy through fiscal 2035, JFE is targeting 500 billion yen in profit from its steel business, including 200 billion yen from overseas operations.
