Steel giant ArcelorMittal offers a new range of steels for the automotive industry that will deliver significant weight savings while improving safety.
The company's R&D team has developed a range of advanced high-strength cold forming steels that should result in a 20 percent reduction in vehicle weight and thus lower emissions. ArcelorMittal will produce the new range of Fortiform steels at its two sites in Belgium: Gent and Kessales.
Due to its superior properties, the Fortiform range is capable of absorbing more energy in an accident with less steel thickness. This makes the steel suitable for use in many structural parts of the vehicle, including the B-pillars, front and rear components.
Fortiform currently consists of three steel grades. Fortiform 1050 is the first product in this new series and has already been tested for formability and weldability by global car manufacturers who have approved it. The first mass-produced vehicles using the new steel will roll off the production line in 2017.
The other two grades, Fortiform 980 and Fortiform 1180, will be launched in 2014-2017. The main challenge for automakers is to reduce the weight of their vehicles to meet future emissions regulations. The Fortiform range of steels should help automakers build lightweight cars and achieve their weight-saving goals without compromising strength and safety.
