According to the updated data, South Korea's scrap imports during July this year increased slightly compared to the previous year. However, imports of scrap steel in the country decreased in the first seven months compared to imports during the corresponding period last year.
The total volume of imports of ferrous scrap in the country during July 2014 amounted to 761,000 tons. Imports rose 5.2 percent year on year.
In July of this year, Japan was the largest exporter of scrap metal to South Korea. Scrap imports from Japan reached 407,000 tons, accounting for over 54 percent of the country's total scrap imports. Scrap imports from Japan rose 26.7 percent year on year. Russia was the second largest exporter of scrap to South Korea. Scrap imports from Russia to South Korea totaled 109,000, an increase of 2.1 percent over the year.
The cumulative imports of South Korea's scrap steel during the elapsed seven-month period in 2014 amounted to 5,060,000 tons, down 8.3 percent from imports in the corresponding seven months of 2013. Korean imports of scrap metal are estimated at a total of 8.69 million tonnes throughout 2014.
