Mexican government considers anti-dumping tax on steel imports

Mexican government considers anti-dumping tax on steel imports
At the request of domestic hot rolled steel coil producers, the Mexican ministry has announced an open investigation into the import of hot rolled strip from China, France and Germany.

According to the Cancero Steel Association, the Ministry was approached by the companies Ternium and Altos Hornos de Mexico with a proposal to impose a 27.2 percent duty on hot rolled coils imported from Germany, a 14.4 percent duty on imports from France, and a 102.9 percent duty on hot rolled coils. rolls imported from China.

The trade group (UPCI) said in a statement that, from an investigation conducted in 2013, it is clear that imports from the aforementioned countries increased by 686 percent, which directly affected domestic steel producers.

Export deliveries of hot-rolled strip from these countries go to Mexico at lower prices than domestic prices for hot-rolled products, so it was decided to consider the current situation as dumping. This negatively affects domestic steel production and the country's economy as a whole.

In addition, Mexican manufacturers have called on the country's trade bloc on international practices (UPCI) to launch an anti-dumping investigation into the import of pipes from the United States, India and Spain. They are proposing tariffs, which range from 40 to 120 percent, on imports of welded steel pipes with an outer diameter of more than 406.4 mm, according to the Mexican Steel Manufacturers Association.
