Exports of scrap from the EU area increased by 5 percent in the first half of 2014

Exports of scrap from the region amounted to 8.55 million tons in January-June this year. The largest export destination of scrap metal from the EU region was Turkey. Turkey imported 5.15 million tonnes of scrap steel from the EU, accounting for 60 percent of the EU's total scrap exports. Exports of scrap to Turkey increased by 12.8 percent during January-June of this year compared to the previous year.

Turkey is also the largest buyer of ferrous scrap from the United States, Russia and Ukraine. At the same time, during the reporting period, exports from the United States decreased by more than 25 percent, and from Russia and Ukraine increased by 65.3 and 607.2 percent, respectively.

Egypt was the second largest importer of scrap metal from the EU area. The country imported 1.04 million tonnes of ferrous scrap from the EU, accounting for 12 percent of the region's total scrap exports. Exports of scrap to Egypt rose 5.4 percent over the previous year.

Aggregate exports of scrap metal from the EU region throughout 2014 are projected to reach 17.11 million tonnes.
