USA will start importing rebar from Poland after a long hiatus

Import licenses promulgated by the US Department of Commerce (DOC) indicate that the country will be able to import rebar from Poland after an eight-year hiatus. For the first time since 2006, the country has received licenses to import steel reinforcing bars from Poland.

According to the Ministry of Trade, import licenses issued in October make it possible to import 2017 tons of reinforcing steel from Poland. A total of 124,168 tons of rebar import licenses are issued this month. Licenses for the import of Polish fittings accounted for only 1.6 percent of the total volume of licenses issued during the month. On the other hand, the dominance of Turkish rebar imports will continue in the future, as Turkish rebar import licenses make up almost 76.5 percent of the total rebar volume provided for in licenses during the month.

Before that, the country last imported fittings from Poland back in 2006. Then imports of Polish rebar totaled 117 tonnes during April 2006. In addition, imports of rebar to the USA from Poland totaled 6,625 tonnes in 2004.

Traders are skeptical about supplies from Poland as long as cheap rebar imports from Turkey continue to dominate US markets. Therefore, whether imports from Poland will come in the coming months and how long it will be able to withstand competition is also questionable.
