World crude steel production in 2014 from the 65 countries reporting to Worldsteel reached 1.625 billion tonnes, up 2.7 percent year on year from 15.82 billion tonnes in 2013.
Estimates for 2014 are preliminary, as they were based on the assumption that the level of steel production in December 2014 will remain close to the results of November 2014. The report released for the fifth time in a row shows positive growth on an annualized basis after a negative result in 2009, when it fell by 7.3 percent.
According to Worldsteel, all regions received positive growth in 2014, except for the CIS countries, South America, parts of Europe and Oceania.
An estimated 45 countries achieved positive growth compared to 2013, among them Moldova + 95 percent, Hungary + 34 percent, Bulgaria + 18 percent, Saudi Arabia + 17.4 percent, Kazakhstan + 13.7 percent, Belarus + 11. 2 percent, Finland + 8.4 percent, Poland + 8.4 percent, South Korea + 7.9 percent, Iran + 6.5 percent, China + 3.8 percent, Russia + 1.8 percent, Germany + 1, 5 percent, US + 1.4 percent, Japan + 0.2 percent.
Worldsteel lists 20 countries that had negative growth in steel production in 2014 compared to 2013, among them Venezuela -33.2 percent, Ukraine -17.5 percent, United Arab Emirates -16.2 percent, Australia - 2.5 percent, Uzbekistan -1.7 percent, Austria -0.3 percent, Brazil -0.1 percent.
