Severstal to invest 150 million rubles in a museum of advanced steels

Северсталь инвестирует 150 млн рублей в музей передовых сталей
Severstal, one of the world's leading steel producers, is announcing the opening of the first of its kind metallurgical museum in Russia, designed to attract young talent to the rapidly growing industry.

Severstal has already invested almost 150 million rubles in a project that should show young people the prospects for a career in the innovative and progressive metallurgical sector in Russia. This project will help preserve the legacy of an industry that has supported Russia's cultural and economic achievements over the centuries. The importance of the project was also recognized by a grant from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, along with investments from the regional government and other local authorities.

The interactive museum is interesting for people of all ages, as it presents both traditional exhibits and interactive screens, audiovisual installations created from rare photo and video archives, documents and artifacts. The museum traces the history of metallurgy from the origins of the craft to the advanced engineering and IT solutions used by modern industrial giants today, such as the Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works, which is one of the largest factories in Russia.

More than 300,500 people work at the ferrous metallurgy plants in Russia, and Severstal employs 52,000 people. The steel industry is the second largest industry in the world and employs over 2 million workers worldwide. The International Labor Organization estimates that mining and manufacturing in the metallurgical sector will have the largest employment growth in 2014-2019, so attracting talent for the industry remains a challenge.

The opening of the museum coincided with the 60th anniversary of the steel plant in Cherepovets. The official opening ceremony was attended by Alexey Mordashov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Severstal, Oleg Kuvshinnikov, Governor of the Vologda Region and Yuri Kuzin, Mayor of Cherepovets.

It was noted that in Russia, traditional industries, which have long become the basis of the economy, are trying to attract the most talented young people to the mining industry and mechanical engineering. Many young people today reject this career as an outdated industry, when in fact it is constantly evolving, innovating to meet environmental challenges and competition. The museum is one of Severstal's initiatives to showcase the progress in the steel industry and to attract young people to the dynamic metallurgical industry.
