Exports of Russian steel scrap are growing

In the first six months of this year, Russian exports of scrap metal increased slightly. The average monthly export volume of ferrous metal scrap from the country amounted to 460 thousand tons. Throughout 2015, Russian exports of scrap metal are expected to amount to 5.17 million tonnes.

According to the latest trade statistics, the export of steel scrap from Russia increased significantly in June 2015. At the same time, the export of scrap metal in the country fell sharply in the month of May this year. Exports of scrap steel from the country during June amounted to 603 thousand tons, demonstrating a significant increase of 11.3 percent on an annualized level. Russian exports of scrap metal in June last year amounted to 542 thousand tons. At the same time, compared to May of this year, the export of steel scrap in June increased by 22.6 percent. Exports of steel scrap in May 2015 amounted to 492 thousand tons.

Turkey was the largest destination for Russian scrap metal exports during the month. Russian exports to Turkey reached 286 thousand tons, which is almost 47 percent of total Russian exports. Exports to Turkey in June rose sharply by 22.3 percent year on year. The second largest export destination was Belarus. Exports of scrap metal to Belarus increased by 51.6 percent compared to the previous year and amounted to 111 thousand tons.

According to the latest trade data, Russia exported 2.757 million tonnes of scrap steel during the first half of 2015. Exports of scrap metal over the period were slightly higher than exports over the same six-month period in 2014. Russian exports of scrap metal increased by 0.8 percent compared to 2.735 million tons exported in the period from January to June last year.
