The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), formerly the Electronics Consumer Association (CEA), is a trade association of 2,200 companies. In a new report released by the Association, the growth of the consumer technology sector is bringing to the forefront initiatives for product recycling and energy-efficient devices.
The 2015 Sustainable Development Report also highlights various advances in a sector that has been successful in reducing carbon emissions. Various companies were highlighted in the report, including Apple, Best Buy, Google, LG, Samsung, Lyft, and Uber.
The report refers to data released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2015. It was noted that consumer electronics is showing a rapid decline among household waste components. The share of consumer electronics in the waste stream declined by almost 4 percent compared to the previous year. In addition, the recycling of consumer electronics products saw a 27 percent increase over the previous year. The amount of consumer electronics ending up in landfills was down 17 percent from the previous year.
It is noted that the number of consumer electronics recycling points has increased in many countries around the world, as noted by the CTA report. The benefits of being a member of the Technology Consumer Association are expressed in promoting business development and strategic relationships, market research, technical education, industry promotion, and standards development.
