David Cameron, British Prime Minister, allows his country to leave the EU if during the upcoming summer referendum supporters of EU membership are not very active, as he said in an interview with The Independent.
The prime minister admitted: “What I am afraid of is the low turnout in the referendum ... After all, many may think: staying in the EU is reasonable, and others will vote for it without me. Now, don't do it. "
According to Cameron, in the UK there are about equal numbers of opponents and supporters of leaving the EU, so turnout will be the main factor. "The voting will be very intense, no doubt about it," he said.
The prime minister also said that the United Kingdom will need "7 to 10 years" to overcome the consequences of leaving the EU. Cameron believes that during this period, the development of the country will be suspended, while the rest of the world will move forward.
According to most opinion polls, the number of supporters of the UK leaving the EU is half of the population, but recently, against the background of the migration crisis, the number of Eurosceptics is gaining new adherents.
The British government decided to hold a referendum on June 23, 2016 on further EU membership after the February summit in Brussels failed to agree on a package of concessions to the British parliament from the leadership of the European Union.
