Data released by the World Steel Association indicates that global production of direct reduced iron (DRI) in April this year increased slightly, almost 1 percent from the previous month.
World DRI production during April 2016 was 4.329 million tonnes, up 0.98 percent from 4.287 million tonnes achieved in March this year.
Iran ranks first in DRI production for a month, according to World Steel. The country overtook India in March this year and is poised to become the world's leading DRI producer. India and Saudi Arabia were the second and third largest producing countries for DRI.
Iran's DRI output in April this year was 1.425 million tons. The country's DRI output in April rose sharply more than 15 percent from the previous month, when it totaled 1.235 million tons in the previous month. India's DRI production in April 2016 was 1.180 Mt, slightly lower than the previous month of 1.221 Mt. Saudi Arabia's DRI output in April of this year was 405,000 tons, which is slightly less than the production of 420,000 tons during March 2016.
World production figures are based on figures compiled from 14 countries that account for about 90 percent of world DRI production. The DRI output (in thousands of metric tons) in the other eleven countries in April 2016 is as follows: Canada (129), Mexico (335), Trinidad and Tobago (Zero), Argentina (44), Peru (3), Venezuela (20 ), Egypt (210), Libya (104), South Africa (75), Qatar (195) and the United Arab Emirates (203).
