Duties in the EU are several times lower than the American ones

Eurofer reiterates his call for the removal of the minimum duty rule, which causes differences in the level of anti-dumping duties between the European Union and the United States.

The association has prepared a list of tariff differences for some goods imported from China. For cold rolled flat products, EU tariffs are 19 to 22 percent, and in the US, 266 percent. In the case of stainless cold rolled flat products, customs duties are levied at 24-25 percent and 255.8 percent, respectively. The Americans imposed duties on coated steel products of 210 percent, and in the EU from 14 to 58 percent. In the case of reinforcement made of high-strength steels, American duties are up to 133 percent, and European duties are from 18 to 22 percent.

Axel Eggert, head of Eurofer, called for a more vigorous defense of the sector against aggressive unfair commercial practices from third countries. The Minimum Duty Principle (LDR) sets EU tariffs well below the actual discharge level.

“The European Union is the only major region to systematically apply the LDR principle. Under certain conditions, it must be possible to cancel it. These conditions must be feasible and accompanied by the calculation of the duty based on the cost-benefit damage. Again, I call on the leaders of the EU member states to finally close the hole in the European trade defense system, ”said Axel Eggert.
