EU Parliament Calls for Freeze Nord Stream 2

The EU Parliament resolution calls for freezing the construction of Nord Stream 2. "The German-Russian gas pipeline is contrary to European interests."

Instead, the European Parliament is in favor of developing a network of LNG terminals. Nord Stream 2 poses a threat to supply lines in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which are compensated by this project. The strategy aimed at the development of the LNG network should be the main component of the “Energy Union”. This will reduce dependence on Russian energy sources, according to the EU parliament.

The United States wants to prevent bypassing Ukraine as a gas transit country through the construction of Nord Stream 2 and the Turkish stream. In particular, Poland and the Baltic states, which are heavily dependent on Russian energy carriers, want to receive LNG gas from the United States and Qatar. In July, Poland received the first shipment of LNG gas from Qatar.

The EU Commission has been investigating Gazprom's case in Europe for five years over the issue of discouraging competition and demand in Eastern Europe. Gazprom provides about one third of the natural gas consumed in Europe. Competition Commissioner Margaret Vestager said Wednesday: "For now, all options are possible." In addition, EU insiders will decide on Monday whether Gazprom will gain access to the Opal pipeline in Germany.
