"China owns one aircraft carrier (Liaoning), and will soon receive a second, and is also considering the possibility of building a nuclear aircraft carrier," the official newspaper People's Daily quoted a Chinese military expert as saying on Friday.
"For the construction of the third aircraft carrier, the latest scientific achievements will be used, and it will most likely be a nuclear-powered ship," said expert Xu Guangyu. He stressed that the development of this type of technology in the creation of warships in China is "slowly but continuously."
The first Chinese aircraft carrier, Liaoning, was built in the USSR in 1985, and the Chinese bought it from Ukraine in 1998.
