This year, the Quebrada Blanca mine produced 17,300 tonnes of copper, and Chile is the world's leading copper producer.
Teck Resources' union at the Quebrada Blanca copper mine on Wednesday rejected a contract offer from a Canadian miner, increasing the likelihood of a strike, the union said.
It is expected that a certain period of mediation with the participation of the government will be introduced before the strike. “The company's last offer was rejected and the strike was approved with 92 percent of the vote,” said Georges Flores, president of the Soyuz 1 group.
The rest of the mine's unions earlier this year decided to extend the contract by 15 months, postponing negotiations until 2018.
