The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) released a weekly report on domestic steel production, showing capacity utilization as well as details on local production for the previous week.
Domestic steel production reportedly totaled 1.873 million tonnes for the week ending June 22, 2019. Manufacturing jumped 3.2% from the same week a year ago. It should be noted that for the week ended June 22, 2018. Capacity utilization rates also increased year-on-year from 77.4% to 80.5%.
YTD adjusted US steel production of 46.870 million tonnes for the week ended June 22, 2019, with a capacity utilization rate of 81.5%. AISI reported a 5.8% increase in production over the previous year. The capacity utilization rate also recorded a noticeable leap. According to AISI, production was only 44.288 Mt at a lower capacity utilization rate of 76.7% for the corresponding period YTD in 2018.
District data indicate that the Great Lakes region continued to be the largest producer. Production in the region was 708,000 net tonnes, followed by the southern region with 668,000 net tonnes.
