US Steelworkers' Union Calls for Protect Workers During COVID-19 Coronavirus

Профсоюз сталелитейщиков США призывает защитить рабочих во время коронавируса COVID-19
As the global pandemic COVID-19 coronavirus spreads around the world, unions, including United Steelworkers, are demanding increased protection and support for workers. USW National Director Ken Neumann said: “As the federal and provincial governments of Canada take action to contain the spread of the virus, we must provide support and protection for workers. USW is committed to the health and safety of our members. The USW represents many workers who are particularly vulnerable at this time, such as airport inspectors and health and nursing home workers. We remind our union members to stay informed and follow the advice of local health authorities. Many of our union members are empowered by our collective agreements to require employers to take measures to ensure the health and safety of our members in the workplace. However, not all workers are unionized, and even union workers do not have all the protection and support they need during these difficult times. ”

The USW joins other members of the labor movement in urging federal and provincial governments to take comprehensive measures to protect and support workers during the COVID-19 crisis. Neumann said: “The measures announced by the governments are still insufficient. Taking time off from work to stop the spread of the virus shouldn't mean losing income, regardless of work or job. Unpaid employed leave does not pay bills. "

USW said: “Particularly during this period, workers require additional paid sick leave, income support and other assistance to cope with job losses and work interruptions that will impact their earnings. The government should provide additional funds to ease the income of health care workers who may be quarantined or sick. Banks, landlords, credit card companies and financial institutions should be instructed to expand and relax requirements for mortgages, rent and bill payments, loan servicing obligations, and other responsibilities that consumers and households face. In addition, the GST /HST loan must be doubled to provide income support to low-income Canadians. ”
