On December 10, 2012, as a result of a break in the console part of the traverse of the spilling stand of the continuous casting machine, two people died at the Ilyich Mariupol Metallurgical Plant. As a result of the preliminary investigation, the factor of the Mnlz Traverse No. 2 MMK named after Ilyich was guilty.
The unsatisfactory quality of welds and a shortage of design documentation allowed by the Russian plant Uralmash caused an accident, the press service of the territorial administration of the Gosgorpromnadzor in the Donetsk region says.
As it turned out, a similar incident occurred in 2004 in Nizhny Tagil (Russia), where the Uralmash plant was cut off. Then two workers were also deadly injured.
Now, on the recommendation of the territorial administration of the Gosgorpromnadzor in the Donetsk region, all plants of the region that have such machines have begun to check their condition by ultrasound diagnostics.
The operation of the second MNLZ was suspended at the Ilyich’s Komnomachnate. The investigation continues.
