Indian producer Tata Steel has commissioned a 500,000 tpa scrap metal recycling plant at Rohtak in Haryana state in northern India to improve the availability of raw materials and reduce dependence on imports.
The steelmaker has also released two grades of scrap metal to the market, which will be produced in a new facility, which was created in partnership with Aarti Green Tech as a construction and operations partner. The facility will purchase scrap from end-of-life vehicles, obsolete households, and the construction, demolition and industrial sectors through Tata Steel's FerroHaat mobile app.
The steelmaker has launched two new brands, Tata FerroBaled and Tata FerroShred, for baled and shredded ferrous scrap produced in the plant.
“Recycling steel using electric arc furnaces is a global trend and will become an imperative in the future for India's pursuit of sustainable growth,” said Yogesh Bedi, head of Tata Steel's steel recycling business last year.
India last week launched a national car recycling policy aimed at increasing domestic scrap recycling capacity and reducing imports. Tata Motors has announced plans to set up a 36,000 vehicle scrappage plant per year in Ahmedabad in western India's Gujarat state.
Tata Steel's facilities in India produced 4.63 million tonnes of steel in April-June, which is 58.7% of the company's consolidated production.
