UK freezes assets and imposes sanctions against Evraz

According to Gov.uk, on May 5 the UK government announced sanctions against Evraz plc. As noted on the website, the metallurgical and mining company operates in industries of strategic importance to the Russian government.

Evraz plc produces 28% of all Russian railway wheels and 97% of rail tracks in Russia. This is vital as Russia uses the railroad to transport essential military supplies and troops to Ukraine.

This action, according to the UK, will further deter companies operating in strategic sectors in Russia. The asset freeze means no UK citizen or company can do business with them. Evraz plc's main operations are in Russia, where the company is a major employer.

Since the invasion, the UK has sanctioned over 1,000 people and over 100 businesses.
