Difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel

Разница между горячекатаной и холоднокатаной сталью

When buying metal products wholesale and retail, customers often ask us about the differences between hot rolled and cold rolled steel. There are some fundamental differences between these two types of metal. These differences are related to the way the steel is processed at the plant, and not to the specifications or product grade presented by here a warehouse in Kiev.

Hot rolled steels

Hot rolling is a process that involves operating a rolling mill at a high temperature (typically above 1700 ° F) above the recrystallization temperature of steel. At a steel temperature above recrystallization, it is easy to mold. Hot rolled steel is generally cheaper than cold rolled steel due to the fact that reheating of the steel is not required (as in the case of cold rolling). As the steel cools, it shrinks slightly, thus providing less control over the size and shape of the final product compared to cold rolling. Hot rolled steel is used where precise shapes and tolerances are not required. It is widely used in construction.

Cold rolled steels

Cold rolled steel is essentially hot rolled steel that has undergone further processing. Steel is processed further in cold rolling mills, where the cooled material (at room temperature) is subjected to plastic deformation, followed by annealing. This process produces a steel product with finer dimensional tolerances and a wider range of surface finishes. The term cold rolled steel is mistakenly used on all products when in fact the name refers to the rolling of flat sheets and coils.

When referring to rod products, the term “cold finishing” is used, which usually consists of cold drawing and /or turning, grinding and polishing. This process results in a higher yield strength and has certain advantages. Cold drawing increases the yield strength and elongation, often eliminating additional costly heat treatment. Eliminates surface defects. Narrows the size tolerance range. Polishing improves the surface finish. These products provide excellent surface finish and are superior in concentricity and straightness compared to hot rolling.
