Maintaining the level of a substance in a container, hopper or tank within a certain range is considered the main condition in the passage of many technological processes. A lack or excess of a substance can lead to unwanted deviations or complete failure, up to equipment failure and an emergency. In order to prevent force majeure, it is necessary to establish constant monitoring of the height of the liquid column. The level gauge will cope with this. It will not only warn of an accident, but also notify of a critical condition using an audible or light level signaling device.

Types of level meters and how they work

At enterprises, depending on the technical conditions, different types of devices are used to measure the level. They can be classified according to the principle of action:

  • The most basic level gauge is a device based on the law of communicating vessels.
  • Mechanical level gauges are devices with a floating signal object in the form of a buoy or float. They were named depending on the form of the indicator.
  • The hydraulic level gauge works according to the law of hydrostatics. Column height is expressed as the ratio of pressure to the product of the density of the medium and the acceleration of gravity.
  • Capacitive fill height gauges are a capacitor immersed in a tank. A change in its electrical capacity serves as a signal for a change in level.
  • The ultrasonic level gauge determines the fullness of the reservoir by reflecting sound waves. In this case, the time of passage of the waves and their frequency are recorded. Ultrasonic level gauges measure without direct contact with the medium.
  • The radar level gauge is based on a linear frequency modulated signal. This signal is emitted towards the product, reflected and returned back. The direct reflected signals are mixed in the sensor and as a result, a new signal is formed, equal to the difference between the previous ones. It is processed by the microprocessor of the sensor into a value for the tank fill level.
  • The method of absorption of gamma radiation by various media works in radioisotope tank filling heights. It is rarely used because it requires security for both the service personnel and the product being measured.

The level gauge can provide continuous monitoring of the quantitative content of liquids and bulk materials in tanks, bunkers and tanks.
