The Russian Metallurgical Combine Severstal has announced the completion of the modernization of turbine unit No. 2 of the Cherepovets Metallurgical Combine (CherMK), one of its key assets. The upgrade will increase the average capacity of the unit from 100 MW to 110 MW, increasing the self-sufficiency of the power plant in electricity production and reducing dependence on external suppliers.
The project, worth more than 800 million RUBLES ($10.03 million), will allow adding more than 90,000 MWh of electricity annually for production needs. According to Evgeny Vinogradov, CEO of the Russian Steel and Resource Assets Division of Severstal, the modernization supports the company's strategic goal of meeting 95 percent of CherMK's electricity needs through its own generation.
Technical modernization and efficiency improvement
The upgrade included the replacement of the PT-80 steam turbine, a key component of the performance improvement. The main upgrades included the replacement of low-pressure flow components; the conversion of the mains hot water boiler to an additional condensing unit; an increase in steam consumption from 220 to 280 tons per hour; and increased generation in condensation mode, reducing heating costs.
