The Canadian Steel Manufacturers Association (CSPA) has released a statement announcing its intention to meet with the Government of Canada following Prime Minister Mark Carney's comments on the removal of tariffs on imported goods coming from the United States that are subject to the USMCA, as previously reported by SteelOrbis.
Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of CSPA, stated: "We appreciate the opinion expressed by the Prime Minister that he is focused on finding a solution for the sectors affected by Section 232, but we need to see actions that are appropriate for the moment," stressing that "a significant amount of steel is entering Canada from the United States without any tariffs."
Cobden stated that 83 percent of all U.
S. steel imports can be produced in Canada, but instead free access to Canadian markets is detrimental to the local steel industry and that the Canadian government should adjust its response to Section 232.
