The Polish producer of coking coal, Jastrzebska Spolka Weglowa SA (JSW), announced force majeure after an underground fire at its Borinia-Zofuwka mine. The incident that occurred on September 12, 2025, is expected to significantly reduce the company's annual production and raise uncertainty about the broader financial implications for JSW Group.
The fire broke out at the Zofiówka mine site, in particular, affecting the long wall C-2 in the 505/1 formation. As a precautionary measure, JSW has closed an endangered area to protect miners and stabilize conditions underground.
JSW estimates that production will decrease by 156,000 tons in 2025 due to the closed zone. Although the company has quantified the immediate tonnage losses, it has not yet determined the broader implications for its operations, contracts, and financial results.
