In the quarter, the company's iron ore production at Pilbara facilities in Western Australia increased by four percent year-on-year and increased by seven percent quarter-on-quarter to 89.7 million tonnes. In the quarter under review, iron ore shipments from the Pilbara facility totaled 91.3 million tons, an increase of seven percent year-on-year and eight percent from the previous quarter.
In 2025, Rio Tinto's iron ore production at its Pilbara facilities totaled 327.3 million tons, down 0.2% from the previous year, while iron ore shipments at the same facilities decreased 0.7% year-on-year to 326.2 million tons.
The company expects iron ore shipments from the Pilbara to remain stable at 343-366 million tonnes in 2026.
Simon Trott, chief executive of Rio Tinto, said: "We have achieved record quarterly iron ore production in the Pilbara with a strong recovery from the extreme weather disruptions at the beginning of the year. At Simandou, we celebrated the important milestone of the first shipment from the port, which demonstrates our ability to implement major growth projects."
