Italy's Tenova announced that the Italian plant manufacturer has been selected by Nippon Steel Corporation to supply the world's largest Consteel ® electric arc furnace (EAF) to the Yawata region at its Kyushu plant in Japan.
Tenova said the project will include the supply of a 340 metric ton Consteel ® electric arc furnace, which will be the world's largest EAF when commissioned. The manufacturer stressed that this installation represents an important milestone in the evolution of electric furnace technology.
Tenova noted that the project will be implemented in partnership with GE Vernova, which will provide its direct feed system for the furnace. The manufacturer explained that this system will provide the highly stable power supply needed to operate a large-scale EAF at optimal performance levels.
Tenova emphasized that the Yawata project represents a strategic investment in both innovation and sustainability. By enabling a transition from traditional blast furnace operations to EAF-based steel production, the project supports Nippon Steel's path to carbon neutrality by 2050, as outlined by the Japanese steelmaker.
