Iron ore production in India reached 296 million tons in fiscal year 25, compared to 283 million tons in fiscal year 24, an increase of 4.59 percent year-on-year. Domestic iron ore production grew at a slower pace than steel production, which grew by more than 10 percent year-on-year in fiscal year 25. This led to a tightening of supplies to the domestic market, BigMint notes.
India is the fourth largest producer of iron ore in the world after Australia, Brazil and China.
Government production
Odisha has retained its first place among the iron ore producing states with a total output of more than 152 million tons in 2017, accounting for more than half of the national production. However, production decreased by 3.3 percent year-on-year due to the loss of production by some large mining companies.
With the exception of Odisha, other states have maintained their record of steady production growth. Chhattisgarh, the second largest producing state in the country, recorded a total output of 50 million tons, an increase of more than 11 percent year-on-year. Similarly, Karnataka maintained its production growth record, recording output of over 48 million tonnes, up 13 percent from the previous year.
Due to the rapid expansion of capacity by key mining companies in Maharashtra, there was an almost 40% increase in production in fiscal year 25, with a total output of 14.9 million tonnes.
