The document, titled "Closing the Cycle: Scrap Metal Markets to Ensure India's Transition to Environmentally Friendly Steel," calls for political support that will be crucial to ensure efficient, transparent and reliable supply of high-quality scrap on a large scale.
IGSC is a joint initiative of WWF-India and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and aims to promote the production and consumption of green steel in India through stimulating policies and demand equalization.
As steel production in India expands and increasingly shifts towards secondary steelmaking routes, demand for scrap metal will increase dramatically. The white paper highlights the growing appetite for scrap, especially from manufacturers based on electric arc furnace (EAF) and induction furnace (IF), where scrap serves as a critical factor in reducing carbon emissions by replacing primary raw materials and improving resource efficiency.
India currently consumes about 41 million tons of ferrous scrap per year, accounting for approximately 23 percent of crude steel production. In line with the government's goal to increase the share of scrap in steel production to 50 percent by 2047, total demand is projected to exceed 200 million tons per year.
