Tata Steel Nederland, a subsidiary of Indian steelmaker Tata Steel, has announced the temporary closure of its DSP plant at its IJmuiden site due to elevated levels of hazardous substance emissions.
According to the company, recent measurements showed that chromium-6 emissions from one stack exceeded permissible limits, prompting immediate action. Tata Steel has stated that safety and environmental protection are its top priorities and therefore the company has decided to cease operations at the site.
Operations will resume only after compliance
The company emphasized that the DSP will remain offline until:
- additional technical and organizational measures are taken are implemented,
- testing will confirm full compliance with environmental standards.
Tata Steel is currently working on solutions to reduce chromium-6 emissions and ensure the plant meets all regulatory requirements.
The timing of the restart has not yet been determined, as this will depend on the results of testing and inspection compliance.
Preventive measure in the face of environmental problems
The shutdown is described as a preventive step aimed at minimizing environmental risks and addressing an identified emission problem.
The direct sheet mill is a casting and rolling plant at the IJmuiden steelworks and plays an important role in the production of sheet metal steel.
