According to a press release published today by Italian steel producer Duferco Travi e Profilati, the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) has certified two of the company's key environmental indicators, namely the Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) and Science Based Emissions Targets (SBET), confirming the company's decarbonization path in line with internationally accepted parameters for the steel industry.
In particular, The certification is carried out under the Steel Climate Standard, a global benchmark adopted by the GSCC to measure, report and independently verify emissions in the steel sector, in line with the targets set by the Paris Agreement.
Duferco Travi e Profilati has set 2022 as a base year with an emission intensity of 1.13 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of hot rolled steel. Based on this, the company has set an interim target of 1.01 million tonnes CO2e per ton by 2030 and a long-term target of 0.12 million tonnes CO2e per ton by 2050, in line with GSCC parameters.
The targets, verified by independent third party Rina Services, are part of an emissions reduction pathway based on measurable and transparent parameters. Specifically, CASEI certification allows a company to control the emissions intensity of its operations, while SBET verification confirms that its corporate goals are aligned with a science-based decarbonization path. From an operational point of view, Duferco's decarbonization strategy is based on the use of recycled ferrous scrap as raw material and renewable energy sources at its main plant in San Zeno Naviglio, which contributes to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions throughout the production cycle.
GSCC noted that certified members have already contributed to the avoidance of almost three million tons of CO2 equivalent, highlighting the role of standardization and transparency in the development of low-emission steel production.
