Romanian investor UMB Steel, part of Dorinel Umbrarescu's construction group UMB, has received approval from the Romanian Competition Council to acquire Romanian steelmaker ArcelorMittal Hunedoara, bolstering its ongoing efforts to expand its presence in the domestic steel sector.
As previously reported by SteelOrbis , the company acquired the production assets of ArcelorMittal Hunedoara for 12.5 million euros, which marks a concrete step forward in strengthening its position in the local market.
ArcelorMittal Hunedoara has been idle since September 2025, with operations suspended due to high energy costs, weak domestic demand and pressure from cheap imports. The plant produced approximately 200,000-300,000 tonnes of long products per year and was already operating under challenging conditions prior to its closure, reflecting the wider difficulties facing regional producers.
The relatively low acquisition price indicates an opportunistic move into distressed assets. However, market players remain cautious about the likelihood and timing of a potential relaunch, given ongoing pressure on profitability, limited pricing power and still sluggish demand in the Romanian market.
At the same time, the deal is seen as part of a long-term positioning strategy. If implemented successfully, it could gradually change supply dynamics in Romania's long steel segment by reducing dependence on imports and better coordinating production with infrastructure-driven demand.
The approval follows UMB Steel's earlier acquisition of the Otelu Rosu plant in 2024 and its attempt to acquire liberty Galati in October 2025, which did not materialize, highlighting the group's growing interest in building a more integrated presence in the domestic market. steel industry.
