The shutdown was first announced in 2021 as part of the company's broader plan to reduce emissions and environmental impacts.
Environmental benefits expected
The closure is expected to lead to measurable improvements in environmental performance, including reductions in visible emissions and harmful substances such as benzene and benzo(a)pyrene. These changes are expected to improve overall air quality.
According to the company, all affected employees are reassigned to other positions in the company, which is supported by individual transition plans.
Continuation of coke production at the remaining facility
After the closure of ArcelorMittal, Dofasco will continue to operate its coke plant No. 2. Coke remains the most important raw material in the blast furnace process for the production of liquid pig iron, which underlines the importance of maintaining an operational balance during the transition period.
President and CEO Ron Bedard noted that the closure reflects the company's long-term commitment to decarbonization, while continuing to support domestic steel production and employment.
