Iran opens Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels during cease-fire, risks remain

Иран открывает Ормузский пролив для коммерческих судов во время прекращения огня, риски сохраняются

During the ongoing war with Iran, a fragile diplomatic process is underway, while signs of de-escalation are emerging, as the cease-fire allows a limited reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said: "In accordance with the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is declared fully open for the remaining period of the ceasefire along the agreed route, as already announced by the Port and Maritime Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran." The media reports.

The waterway, which normally carries about 20 percent of the world's oil flows, was almost closed during the conflict, severely affecting shipping and energy markets.

Cease-fire and diplomatic negotiations are gaining momentum

A temporary cease-fire is currently in effect, and negotiations are continuing between the United States and Iran aimed at reaching a broader agreement. U.

S. officials have indicated that a long-term agreement is possible, although key differences remain, especially over Iran's nuclear program and uranium reserves.

At the same time, international efforts are intensifying: about 40 countries are participating in discussions on ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Disruptions in shipping and oil flows persist

Despite the partial opening of the sea route, it remains unstable.

During the peak of tension:

  • Many vessels avoided the strait due to security threats
  • Several ships turned back after law enforcement actions by the US Navy
  • Oil flows were significantly disrupted

Even now, only limited supplies have resumed, underscoring the ongoing uncertainty in global energy logistics.

Market and geopolitical prospects remain uncertain

Although the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the ceasefire events have brought some relief to global markets, the situation remains fragile.

Any breakdown in negotiations or resumption of negotiations, escalation, could again disrupt energy flows and increase volatility in global commodity markets.
