According to preliminary data from the US Department of Commerce, US monthly steel imports in March of this year increased by 5.3 percent compared with February and decreased by 29.2 percent year on year, amounting to 1,607,503 tons. In value terms, U.S. steel imports totaled $1.6 billion in March, up from $1.47 million in February and $2.6 billion in March 2025.
The largest sources of U.S. steel imports in March included: South Korea with 264,991 tons, Brazil with 264,350 tons, Canada with 258,994 tons and Vietnam with 160,793 tons.
By product groups, imports of semi-finished products amounted to 405,057 tons in March, compared to 434,653 tons in February and 596,974 tons in March 2025. Flat steel imports totaled 472,651 tonnes in March, down from 375,780 tonnes in February and down from 777,041 tonnes. Imports of long products in March totaled 349,879 tons, down from 347,431 tons in February and down from 368,415 tons in March last year. Imports of tubes and pipes totaled 304,072 tons in March, up from 306,550 tons in February and from 425,938 tons in March 2025.
The import share of the U.S. steel market was estimated at 16 percent in March and 15 percent in the first three months of this year, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.
