Japanese steel company Nippon Steel Corporation has announced two important decisions aimed at strengthening its global growth strategy, strengthening its operations in Europe and streamlining the organization of its specialty steel business.
USSK will become Nippon Steel's main European operations center
According to the company statement, Nippon Steel has decided to transfer U.S. Steel Košice, s.r.o. (USSK), a Slovak subsidiary of United States Steel Corporation, is directly owned by Nippon Steel. The transition is scheduled for October 1, 2026, and on the same day the company will be renamed Nippon Steel Slovakia s.r.o. (NSSK). Nippon Steel said USSK will be positioned as the main operating center for its European operations.
USSK has been supplying high-quality steel products to a wide range of sectors, including automotive, electrical, packaging, energy and construction, primarily in Central and Eastern Europe, since it began operations in 1965. Nippon Steel said the plant's strategic location, diversified sheet steel product portfolio, solid customer base, highly skilled workforce and reliable equipment will play a key role in its European growth plans. The company also noted that Europe is the world's third-largest steel market after China and the United States, while demand for high-quality steel is expected to increase, especially in Central and Eastern Europe.
