According to SSAB, extensive measurements have not revealed concentrations in air, gases or soil exceeding applicable limits, except for previously known results. After consulting with external experts, the company concluded that the symptoms were caused by a combination of factors, primarily exposure to fine dust particles from construction work, enhanced by low humidity and seasonal respiratory viruses.
About 20 employees of the subcontractor reported symptoms of illness in connection with excavation work at the new steel mill, and seven sought medical help. SSAB suspended all work at the construction site on April 3 after four employees of the subcontractor reported symptoms of illness and sought medical help, as previously reported by SteelOrbis.
Carl Orrling, Technical Director and Head of Transformation at SSAB, stated that safety remains the company's top priority and that the facility will be opened step by step in a controlled and secure manner.
