According to media reports, Nigerian-based steel company African Industries Group has acquired 500 hectares of land in the Nigerian state of Niger to build what is expected to be the country's largest solar-powered steel mill.
The land allocation was approved by the Government of Niger State as part of efforts to promote industrialization, attract investment, and strengthen domestic steel production.
The planned project is a multibillion-dollar investment and will combine steel production with solar energy production. According to the company, the facility will be powered by a dedicated solar energy system, supporting Nigeria's efforts to increase industrial production while reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.
The project will be developed in stages, with the first phase focusing on the establishment of steel production and ancillary infrastructure. The company has not yet disclosed the planned production capacity of the plant or the timing of the project.
The new project is expected to further strengthen the company's presence in Nigeria's steel sector, while supporting the country's broader industrialization goals.
