JFE Steel launches Japan's first large-scale stamped coke oven

The Japanese steel company JFE Steel has started work on the newly built coke battery No. 6-A at the West Japan Works plant in Fukuyama after completion of construction and operational testing.

The capacity of the new coke oven is 420,000 tons per year.

The construction of the coke oven, which was commissioned on August 31, represents an investment of approximately 45 billion yen ($282 million) and is designed for annual revenue. The production capacity is about 420,000 tons. Construction was carried out between May and August 2023-2026.

The battery of 52 furnaces is Japan's first large-scale coke oven to use stamp loading technology, in which coal dust is compacted before being loaded into the furnace from the side, instead of being fed from above using a conventional top loading process.

Technology to reduce costs and increase efficiency

According to JFE Steel, the higher bulk density achieved by pressing coal improves the quality of coke, which improves production efficiency, reduces operating costs and makes operations more environmentally friendly compared to traditional top loading technology. The company said the investment is part of its strategy to strengthen its domestic manufacturing base and further improve its manufacturing capabilities.
